Those born in October enjoy a spectacular birthstone to commemorate their birthdays – the beautiful opal. It has endless color combinations and beautiful coloring characteristics. The ancient Greeks believed that wearing opals gave people the ability to see into the future. The name comes from the Greek word opallios, meaning "to see a change in color," as they diffract light to show a multitude of colors. In Europe, opals have long been symbols of joy, purity, and truth. These stones are often compared to fireworks, galaxies, and volcanoes for their striking colors.

Opal helps stabilize emotions, manages stress and anxiety, and promotes feelings of tranquility. It's believed to be a powerful tool for emotional balance and healing. A stone of protection, Opal is a marvelous shield to keep from absorbing other people’s negative thoughts and energies. Just as it uses diffraction to produce its colors, it can also run interference around challenging people or situations that affect your mood or hurt your feelings. Opal can also provide a “cloak of invisibility” in circumstances where one does not wish to be noticed or needs to fade into the background. It is highly beneficial when venturing into dangerous places, or in shamanic work where stealth is required.

Use opals to gain introspection and discover what no longer serves you so that you can let that stuff go. When holding an opal during meditation, you are likely to find it easier to connect to the spiritual realm. In the context of creativity and inspiration, the Opal is credited with sparking the imagination and inspiring the artistic mind. Its kaleidoscope of colors stirs up creativity, making it a favorite talisman for artists, writers, musicians, and other creative professionals.
